We are Danny and Gwen Mairs, we established Mairs Livestock Co L.P in 2019, after moving from California to Ironton, Missouri. Our son Matthew joined us on this new journey as we began a fresh chapter, leaving behind the challenges of life in California.

Danny’s goal is to raise high-quality beef cattle specifically adapted to the southern Missouri environment—particularly its fescue pastures, heat, humidity, and insect pressure—without sacrificing key performance traits such as feed efficiency, growth, carcass quality, and reproductive success.

Shortly after purchasing an Angus seedstock operation, we began encountering challenges with straight-bred Angus cattle, including foot issues, heat and fescue intolerance, and associated reproductive problems. To address these concerns, we implemented a complementary crossbreeding system designed to maximize heterosis—especially in traits like reproduction and pounds of calf weaned per cow—while maintaining strong carcass characteristics.

Our crossbreeding program begins with purebred Angus and Red Angus cows mated to Beefmaster bulls. This produces females that are approximately ½ Angus, ¼ Brahman, ⅛ Shorthorn, and ⅛ Hereford—resulting in hardy, fescue- and heat-adapted females. These cows are then strategically mated to SimAngus bulls using RightMate (a DNA-assisted mating tool). RightMate helps align major effect genes to enhance key production traits and overall profitability.

We collect Individual performance information and DNA on all animals and submit them to International Genetic Solutions (IGS) which uses American Simmental’s multi-breed database to calculate EPD’s on each animal. 

Our cattle are stout, soggy-middle, slick haired and sound-footed. They thrive in heat and humid conditions on endophyte infected fescue. They also excel in the feedyard and on the rail.

Our mission is to provide ranchers with durable, heat-tolerant heifers that bring the hybrid vigor and heterosis needed to succeed in the Fescue Belt.
